Major Oak Awards, the Spirit of Sherwood Fanzine Awards

About the Major Oak Awards

Spirit of Sherwood yearly grants the Major Oak Awards, honouring Excellence in Robin of Sherwood Fanzine (stories, poems, filks and artwork) Achievement. Club members get a vote in the ballot. The Awards (popularly called "Oakies") are presented to the winners during a hilarious ceremony at the Weekend in Sherwood convention.
Due to the demise of the paper fanzines (most new RoS fanfic and art is now published on the Internet), the Major Oak Awards have not been awarded since 2005.

The person responsible for compiling the ballots, tabulating the votes, and scripting the Major Oak Awards presentation is Rache.

The Major Oak Awards are named after the Major Oak in Sherwood Forest, a huge oak of about 800 years old which is believed to be the hiding place of Robin Hood and his Merry Men.

For more information about the real Major Oak, see the Major Oak webpage

2005 Major Oak Awards (1985-2004: twenty years of RoS fanfic)

The 2005 Oakies were presented at Weekend in Sherwood IX on 26th June 2005.

Note on how the votes were tabulated:
The nine previous Oakies were determined by ballots listed all contents of all RoS zines published in the previous year (or years when more than one year had elapsed since the previous Oakies), broken down into categories of zines, novels/novellas, long stories, short stories, vignettes, poems/original filks, adapted filks, cover artwork, illustrations and independent artwork. This year, the awards honor twenty years' worth of RoS fanfic. The ballot listed all RoS anthology zines and standalone novels/novellas known to have been published between 1985 and 2004. Voters were invited to write in naming their favorite stories, cover artwork and poetry, as well as their choices in the new categories of RoS website, online story, online poetry and online artwork, due to the fact that writing out a list of all eligible material would be unthinkably huge (we'd all probably be going through it from now until the fortieth anniversary of RoS fanfic!). The reason that no awards are being given for illustrations, independent artwork or adapted filk (original filks were rolled into the "poetry" category) is - I'd like to give a brilliantly thought-out explanation, but it's simply that, contrary to one of our favorite quotes - I forgot. To the affected artists and filkers - I apologize! These categories will be on the next ballot.

Merry meet and merry read and merry view again!
Rache
